Why it matters
New York venues and the FDNY require scenery, drapes and decorative materials in public spaces to be flame-retardant. Venues can refuse a piece that arrives without the right certificates.
Fabrics
Drapes, scrims and fabric-wrapped panels should be inherently flame-retardant or treated, and certified to NFPA 701. The certificate travels with the fabric.
Scenery and decorative materials
Wood, foam and other combustible materials are specified as fire-rated products or treated with a flame-retardant, and the treatment is documented for the venue.
Plan it into the build
- Ask the venue for its requirements before materials are chosen.
- Specify rated materials in the shop drawings.
- Keep certificates for every fabric and treated material.
- Send the certificates to the venue before load-in.
