Guide

Acrylic or glass for a display case.

How the two compare for clarity, weight, safety, scratching and cost, and when each is the right choice.

Low-iron glass

  • The clearest option, without the green edge of standard glass.
  • Hard to scratch, so it keeps its clarity under daily cleaning.
  • Heavy; large cases need stronger frames and more crew to install.
  • Laminated or tempered for safety; laminated glass holds together if broken.
  • The usual choice for permanent luxury and museum-style vitrines.

Acrylic

  • Lighter and more impact-resistant than glass.
  • Can be bent, bonded with near-invisible seams and polished on the edge.
  • Scratches more easily and needs the right cleaning products.
  • The usual choice for pop-ups, touring displays and shapes glass can’t make.

Which to choose

For a permanent case in a flagship, low-iron glass. For a case that travels, curves or must be light, acrylic. A sample of each beside the product settles it.
